Tanzania reviews “Flag of Convenience” Registration

Tanzanian president John Magufuli suspended the registration of foreign vessels in Tanzania on 19th January 2018. This follows the investigation of several Tanzanian-flagged ships said to be carrying drugs and arms recently.

On November 27, 2017, a vessel registered in Tanzania was seized in the Dominican Republic with 1,600 kilograms of cocaine and on 6th January this year the Greek coast guard impounded another Tanzanian-flagged vessel MV ANDROMEDA which had been en route to Libya with 29 containers of arms and explosives in contravention of EU and UN embargoes which prohibit the supply of arms to Libya.

The two vessels have had their licenses revoked by the Tanzanian authorities and President John Magufuli also ordered a full investigation into the 470 vessels currently registered as Tanzanian.
